Year 1.1 students followed an activity to mark Internet Safer Day which we celebrate on the 9th February. The students first were asked whether they have internet access at home and why they need it. They mentioned that they use it for YouTube, Netflix, to play games, to learn phonics and to check School homework. Afterwards, they watched a short clip ‘Safer internet Day 2021’, where they understood that we shouldn’t always believe what we read. Following this video, they listened to the story ‘Ir-rigal’ and discussed if they agree or not with Mark’s attitude. They ended this activity by coloring one of the characters. On the poster the children were asked to write a slogan.

Safer Internet activities at St Nicholas College Dingli Secondary, organised by Ms. Melanie Cini. As part of the Safer Internet Day activities PSCD teachers delivered lessons related to Internet Safety as part of the curriculum held in school during PSCD Lessons, Ms. Melanie Cini and her students of St. Nicholas College, Secondary School, Dingli, teamed up with their European Twinning partners of the eTwinning project Think, Act, Inspire! to work on various topics within the PSCD Curriculum. A special assembly was held on the day. As part of an the eTwinning project: Think, Act, Inspire! these past few weeks, Ms. Melanie Cini’s students worked on various aspects of internet safety in class, online and on Twinspace. In mixed national teams, students created tips and slogans which were then transformed into posters available to be printed and shared in schools. Power point presentation (years 1 – 3): Buddy the Dog’s Internet Safety Story (The children listen to a story and learn a chant related to cyber safety. The presentation also includes various video clips and a quiz.)
To play the quiz, pupils stand up. If the answer is ‘yes’ they have to put both their hands up, if the answer is ‘no’ they have to squat.

Snakes and Ladders Game using a beebot. The snakes and ladders was made up of different items that one encounters while using the internet. As the students of our class are young, we decided to show them a simple slide show and a video explaining the importance of surfing the internet safely. We focused on three important rules:
Always ask your parent (or an adult you trust) first.
Only talk to people you know.
Stick to places that are just right for you.

A short video showed a ‘boy’ implementing these rules.

Later the children had to draw how they can follow the three rules at home. It was a simple yet effective lesson for our class!

Children gave their own examples. I read the list of information presented in the lesson plan that has been provided and children had to tell me whether that kind of info was personal or private. – We started by watching a video clip having real and fake news.
– A discussion was created where students expressed themselves if the clips were real or fake.
– We discussed sources that can be real or fake.
– We have also looked at the lock on the address bar. The teacher has explained that if there is a lock in the address bar it means that the site is safe.
– The students saw a Power Point Presentation and during this presentation, we discussed when to trust people, massages and requests. We looked at fake adverts, chain letters and fake competition.
– We closed the session with a quiz on Quizziz. The teacher created a set of questions related to the lesson. The students answers the questions individually and then we looked at them together in class.

The class was shown a PowerPoint (Safer Internet Poem) featuring a poem about internet safety as an introduction. Apart from the poem’s message , we went through the pairs of rhyming words. Then, we went through the PowerPoint “Smartie the Penguin”, during which we discussed the problems being encountered by Smarties. Together, we went through “Smartie the Penguin Handout” in class. Next, we read the Maltese e-book “Ir-Rigal”. Once again, we discussed how Mark should tackle the problems he was having. Then, the class was shown a PowerPoint showing posters/slogans in connection with a safer internet! Finally, the pupils were asked to write a slogan or draw a poster in relation to Internet Safety!

We spoke about what the internet is and devices on which we use the internet eg computer, mobile, laptop and tablet. Then I showed the children a video of ‘Red and Murphy’ where Murphy becomes overwhelmed with the amount of devices he is trying to keep up with. After watching the video we discuss what happened and if they every feel like Murphy when they are using a lot of devices. We then meditate and breath just like Red told Murphy to do.

1. Introduction to Safer Internet Day – children were introduced to the session via a brief overview of what is Safer Internet Day and why we celebrate it each year. The following points were discussed:
Word Check – children were given a list of words related to Internet and they were asked if they know what they mean
What is Safer Internet Day?
What do you use the internet for?
Who can use the internet?
How do we access the internet?
How would you feel if the internet was turned off?
What is your online identity?
An Internet we trust – we expanded more on the meaning of this year’s theme

2. Internet Safety Tips – children then followed a PowerPoint Presentation with very useful tips to consider while surfing the internet

3. Traditional Tales – Internet Safety Discussion – children then had the opportunity to practice what they learnt in the previous step by discussing different scenarios in which characters from traditional tales (such as Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Cinderella and the Three Little Pigs) encountered a problem while using the internet. Children were asked what each character should do in such situation.

4. Kahoot! quiz about Internet safety – children participated in a short quiz about internet safety using their school tablet

5. Design an internet safety slogan – finally, children designed a slogan about internet safety. Children were presented with 3 slogans and they had to choose one and design a poster for it. The slogans presented were the following:
If you don’t know the sender, it might be a pretender
Prevent a jam, don’t open spam
If they email you asking for cash, be sure to throw it in the trash

6. Children were also given a bookmark with one internet safety tip. Every student had a different safety tip.
